TA toolkit

The Teaching Assistant's toolkit

We revisited the teaching assistant's toolkit this January (2010) to make good use of the snow time this winter.  It was based on work I did
several years ago when I ran a course (together with Susie Bergenroth from Nottinghamshire CC) for teaching assistants who supported pupils in science lessons.  I've decided to put all the resources in one place - it's easier than emailing out packs of material every time I receive a request.  If you are looking for the Science specific materials (includes Science templates and additional materials) follow the link at the bottom of the page.

Feel free to download and use this material in your own school.

This is the presentation for our special school teaching assistants

Some of the strategies employed include:
  • Sequencing - putting steps in order
  • Cloze - filling in the missing words.
  • Jigsaw - photocopy onto acetate and then photocopy over a picture to make a jigsaw.  TA to cut out, pupil to assemble jigsaw
  • Key words - word wall for recording and testing key words from a topic
  • Matching - matching halves of sentences, picture to text etc
  • Pelmanisms - matching pairs from cards face down on desk (TA to create cards, pupil to match pairs)
  • Sorting grid - putting items into categories or groups
  • Spider diagram - a way to record links and facts without much writing
  • True or false - TA to create statements and pupil to complete true or false box
  • Write & pic - summarising info with a picture and some text.  Can be used for comic strips as well.

The teaching assistant's toolkit is attached at the bottom of the page.
